5 Years later… Dialogue on StarTek in Kingston Ontario.

Malicious intent

Ashton Deroy Writes: Even After 5 years later & a return to Kingston Ontario. I still have a bad taste in my mouth when people mention my ex-employer StarTek. I mean I don’t know why? They were so “perfect” to me.  Maybe it was the lack of schedule control, the fact they pay under the living wage or maybe it was just the fact that creatively speaking I would deal with their terrible customers all day & then the manager I had would chuck dog s*** at me!

It is worth exploring in a full-blown style essay. Why am I still upset with StarTek 5 years later? I guess you can say I almost never dealt with them properly. Maybe today helped though when I called the company’s Human Resources department & told them 5 years later, but I am still pissed. The first thing is the lack of schedule control. People have families & Social lives. Yet time after time StarTek unnecessarily cuts careers short because people are dealing with family issues, childcare issues or just mental health issues. Damn it StarTek, why should I not call you and tell you I am pissed?!

https://www.ontariolivingwage.ca/living_wage_by_region

The living wage for Kingston Ontario is $17.57 hourly. Not $15.50 you cheap pieces of s****! You represent T-Mobile and it is a seriously bad reflection on them that they can not pay their employees a living wage. Again this is adequate aggression coming from me. You have 0 right in the public’s eye to act like another corporate Tyrant! Pay your people a living wage & realize that it is not up for debate.

Creatively written: Lastly, why would I be happy about a place where I was bullied by customers then bullied by management? Like I said it is pretty much like I was being picked on by customers on the phone 10 hours a day. Then when I got off the phone…. My manager made sure my mouth was open wide so she could huck in dog s****! Yes, it is reasonable to be reviewed as an employee, but what happened to me was a systematic beat down.

To StarTek:

Kiss my a**! My friends were considering you for employment and I just wanted to share my true opinions. No, I do not think my friends should work for StarTek. I consider my movement an outside intervention on behalf of the workers of Kingston. Do better, I am not afraid to say you need to do better.

(613)-888-1958 is my telephone number. If you have a concern with my blog feel free to text me or call me. Yes, I indeed called StarTek’s human resources department today to say “5 years later & I am still pissed.” I think it needed to be said. I am still asked about StarTek and this act of civil disobedience was to say, “I have reasons to feel the way I do about StarTek.” This was a very upsetting experience for me.

I believe call centers starting back in 2015 beginning with StarTek played a role in my downfall to a road of drug addiction, self-harm and suicidal behavior.

No one who doesn’t understand Codependence can call themselves a “feminist”.

Codependency

Ashton Deroy writes: It may surprise you to hear but before definitively selecting Socialist Feminism over Liberal Feminism. I saw a key difference in the ideologies. One of them supports a very individualistic approach to feminism. The other (Socialist Feminism) puts family solidarity at the forefront. I am Canadian so in many ways, I grew up with a bias for Liberal Feminism. However, as I got older and tried to define my Liberal Identity. I realized I was identifying in something without principles.

Socialist Feminism understands the reality that many women will have a higher quality of life if they are married, cohabitate & have adequate rights in the workforce. These concepts are part of why France has a 35-hour workweek. I also saw room to understand in Feminism for the 99% by Cinzia Arruzza that many women develop economic dependence that makes them overly rely on a partner. This leaves room to understand the concept of Codependence in Socialist Feminist theory.

What is codependence? To me, Codependence is a behavior that enables poor mental health, addiction & tyranny. Especially in the context of a relationship. However, let us extend the concept. Many respected voices in the Codependence discussion groups also recognize that Codependence may indeed enable & allow workers’ rights abuses. Codependent people are much more likely to be scammed in a rental agreement & be taken advantage of in other aspects of life. Again Codependence is understood & fits into Socialist Feminist theory, which I find quite incredible.

I feel no one who calls themselves a feminist can proceed to fail to understand what codependency is. How can we claim to boost the human rights of the many without understanding this very common problem, that quite frankly sets our cause back? The answer is we can’t. The biggest problem I have with Liberal Feminism is it fails to address how this issue sets progressive feminism. How could feminism move forward under the guidance of a bunch of people pleasers?

The answer is, it can’t! “I’ll have my rights if you let me.” Said the cry of women everywhere who can’t escape an exploitative boss, an abusive housing arrangement & regular exposure to sexual harassment. However, even when women do stand up for themselves. It is not like we as a society have a whole lot of practice listening. I always go back to the colleague I had who was Sexually harrassed at Hinduja Global Solutions but was forced to sit next to her harasser through arranged seating. A concept I advocated that the company should lose the privilege to coordinate.

You may find yourself wondering… How can feminism be set back with all the progress in our legal system? Well in Feminism for the 99% they talk about how Liberal Feminism is very accessible to the wealthy who can hire a lawyer but inaccessible to everyone else. I also argue that advocating femism requires a bit of backbone that Codependent people are not going to necessarily put in. Should that stop women of all backgrounds from receiving their rights though? I’d argue we need to make more pathways to allow people like me to stand up for people of all backgrounds to allow me to take the transferred risk and say “How you are treating this person is wrong & you need to stop!” Maybe I can do that through my writing. Maybe I need to demand to be able to do more.

No one who doesn’t understand Condependence can call themselves a “feminist”. You just don’t understand what is affecting the cause without understanding this enabling tyrannical behavior in spouses, jobs & housing. To make any solid 100% complete feminist theory. We must stop & have a conversation about codependence with its relationship to feminism. We also have to recognize more family focussed & independent views on feminism. There is no reason those concepts can’t be combined for a more unified theory.

Call center confessions: 3 calls I slammed the phone on.

Ashton Deroy 3 calls I slammed

Ashton Deroy writes: This is a conversational blog. That being said I will not censor who I worked for. In compliance with privacy regulations, I will not recall customer names or any details of accounts. Here is how it is though. If I worked for you or your client I am going to write about it. The only damage I can really do is alienate myself from the telecom industry. An industry I decided to retire from as a matter of health.

That is just a fact of life. In my call center career, I have worked for StarTek, Hinduja Global Services, Concentrix, Stream, Teleperformance and AND Agency. Some of this will also be from my recollections of memories & personal storytelling as is custom with many blogs.

Windstream logo

Call Center: Teleperformance

Client: Windstream

Problem: Phone out of service, requires fixing right away.

Okay so in this call picture an afternoon, where I am already high on caffeine pills in Downtown Toronto by Eglington at Teleperformance. I talk to the lady on the phone and she is upset because her phone isn’t working. I tell her something like we will get a tech out there a month from the call. She starts screaming, “This is unacceptable! I want a manager!” I hung up… No, I will not win any Tech support of the year awards for that. Why did I hang up? Well, escalating is pointless in tech support. Managers can’t credit customers more, they don’t have magical call taking powers that make a technician available. I just thought rather than drive up my call handle time with a pointless call flow I would just hang up! SLAMMED

“Sorry, you have no phone service but there is nothing we can do as a service vendor.”

T-Mobile for business

Call Center: StarTek

Client: T-Mobile

Problem: My bill seems too expensive. Debating the company accountant!

Okay, so this was an early morning call-in Kingston. This customer calls in and he says his bill is too high. This is a business service line I am working on. Turns out this guy is the company’s accountant and after 1 hour of examining this lunatic’s bill line by line. He is ready to go again. I am autistic and I have a learning disability related to math. So I just, go ahead and hang up! SLAMMED!

“They paid me $11 an hour. That is hardly enough to justify learning math at the accountant’s level.”

Shaw Cable logo

Call center: S&P Data

Client: Shaw Cable

Problem: I am a telemarketer!

I was telemarketing at S&P Data in Trenton. Basically, my job was to sell a home phone line to Shaw Cable customers. This was my second job after getting a certificate in Digital Marketing & I hated it! So, as usual, I call someone’s home. They let me do my full sales pitch for some sadistic reason. Then the person just starts going ape s**** on me! I mean they just let me have it. Explaining how I am such a foreign piece s**** for calling them in Alberta and they don’t even know me! Then I am asking them to buy something. I can’t say I blame them but the rant went on too long. So I hang up! SLAMMED!

“In parts of Alberta, it is a bit of custom to gain personal relationships with Business salespeople. The anonymity of call centers has  been largely criticized as a poor way of approaching business relationships & in many places Telemarketing is an offensive practice.”

Listen I was never an employee of the month at a call center. If I was that certainly would not be as interesting to write about. I think the worst thing about these places is, me hanging up on the people I did was not that irrational. The customer at WindStream tried to abuse me with hierarchy, the T-Mobile customer abused me in relation to capacity for logic & reasoning & the Telemarketing customer simply scolded me! Phones have a hangup option for a reason. I am damn proud I pressed it.

Want to read a positive workplace story? Read about my experience working for Hawkins Cheezies. Like anybody living on the edge, there are winning points in my life where I show true character. Then there are other times where I have to bail on my responsibilities for one reason or another.

3 issues with Belleville Ontario Public Transit

3 Issues with Belleville Public Transit.pngAshton Deroy writes: Trenton & Belleville Ontario are growing and are set to grow more with tourism. However one of the biggest issues I have brought up to the Bay of Quinte in the expansion is the lacking infrastructure for public transit. We have a lacking transit system that does not work, but we are still way too ready to tell people to rely on their livelihoods with a hit or miss bus. It is ridiculous.

Here are three clear problems with the Belleville Transit system.

  1. One way transit system– I get home from school faster than I get to school. Why is this? It is because my home comes after the college on the bus route. Meaning instead of the bus taking me the simple 5 K from my nearest stop to college. I am doing the entire trip back to the terminal before I can even get to the college.
  2. 1 hour until your next bus – If I miss a bus at 10 minutes after 7:00p.m. . I have to wait until 8:10pm just to be able to get home 5k in the cold
  3. It is legitimately faster to walk at times- For example if I just missed 12:10pm bus and I needed to get home in an hour. It would be faster for me to walk home then it would be to wait for the next bus to arrive.

Other issues with Belleville Public Transit

  1. No full functioning nightlife service– If we want to reduce impaired driving it is vital we have an ongoing service for popular pub nights. Neglecting that we need not think we have enough alternatives to prevent drunk driving.
  2. Lousy weekend service – Saturday & Sunday really should have full day bus service. They do not… I think we should fix that because if Belleville is going to handle tourism. They are going to need adequate bus systems.
  3. Over filled bus – We need to add more buses on routes like the #7. Just because right now people are close to sitting on the roof of the bus at this point. How do we fix this? Add another bus during peek use times. This is large part of why I avoid the bus at 8:00am , 12:00pm and 6:00pm because they are crowded bus times.
  4. Accessibility issues – The fact is the bus creates accessibility to work, education and broad transportation would make Quinte West & Belleville fully accessible. In fact we don’t have a more functional bus service. Why don’t we expect disabled people to get anywhere past 8:00pm on a Sunday?
  5. Not meeting the demands of the laborers or employers – The lowest earners are laborers who are clearly dependent on transit. Chances are they have not had a job over 3 months, they make less than $20,000 making them dependent on the cheapest form of transportation. So when HGS, who I reference all the time demands people make a midnight shift. How are these laborers who are at the lowest end of the societal incomes supposed to get to work? The answer is they don’t & this is why I quit my job at HGS.

Improvements since I first wrote this post

  1. Belleville added an express bus for Loyalist College – I could easily make this in to a negative point. The stupid express book has taken me to the terminal when I have wanted to go home 5 times now! However, this is an improvement for the mass of riders who do not want to be smothered by the mass of Loyalist College students riding Monday – Friday.

If the bus is not working with our current setup. I am curious as to why we keep running the bus this way? With the current demand for the bus and the fact that Belleville is supposed to be an urban place, how the bus runs makes 0 sense. We need to run at least the 2 buses an hour system at least until 10:00p.m. , We should opt for a 2 way bus system similar to Toronto & we need to clear bus routes so that people can get places much faster.

Quinte West & Belleville Ontario. Life is about leisure not labor.

Why Marx was Right

Ashton Deroy Writes: Right now I am reading Why Marx was right. The quote below, “A good life is about leisure, not labor.”  captures the kind of attitude I believe Belleville Ontario & Quinte West must adapt if we are to heighten our quality of life. To HGS Belleville Ontario . The history I dictate will indicate you guys never understood this fact of life. “When do I fit in my leisure activities?” Whatever they may be, should not be approached as a question, so much as a demand! What do we really mean when we say that? “If you aren’t going to give me my own time. Why should I support your establishment?!” It is something workers ought to shout while physically twisting Human Resources or an executive’s arm!

I think we should seriously consider retracting the social license to operate for places such as call centers & factories that mistreat workers. You can already see the social fabric changing around these places. At my family events, you can see older sensitive people kindly giving the confiding advice to mistreated workers in Belleville & Quinte West. You see them kindly saying, “You have to quit your job. If they don’t start seeing pushback they will never learn.”

“A good life is about leisure, not labor.”

Windstream: Not suitable for emergencies.

Windstream, Not suitable for emergenciesAshton Deroy writes: In Arkansas, Windstream is not suitable for emergencies. What do you when a company offers a home phone service, which is legally supposed to provide a home phone suitable for emergencies but they are not? I am an ex technical support representative through Teleperformance.

I had to quit the company because I got tired of letting down our customers the same way every day. When your phone is down? Fix the things! Now, of course, there are major problems that contributed to the issues. 1. We do not have enough technicians. Probably because the job is complete crap. 2. Windstream really does not have anyone holding the company accountable. 3. Most of the customers have no other options for ISP providers.
