Why you need to fund food?

Ashton Deroy writes: This blog is an open letter to anyone involved with Keys Job center in Kingston Ontario. The narrative not included in the letter sent to Keys Job center is that I fully blame the current Provincial administration under the Progressive Conservatives here. I have also emailed Kingston Ontario’s Provincial MP who is a representative on our side. They are an NDP representative which is Ontario’s Socialist representation who currently represent my political views as a Canadian Social Democrat/Socialist.

I maximized my emphasis on rage related to this issue because the impulsive decision to make austerity cuts that harm people who can’t express their best interests is reckless. If we want people to work? We have to feed them. We have to show them it is worth working in Kingston Ontario. We have to show them that society cares about them getting on their feet. This job center should not just be a cold place of work, work work. After all the coldness of our employers within Kingston Ontario is what I consider a large contributor to the issues of working poverty within our community.

To: Keys Job Center.

Why you need to fund food_

Purpose: To convince anyone involved with funding that Grocery cards must be seen as a necessity.

Outcome: I am hoping this will illustrate the reasons why helping with food is an essential service of this program. Not an accessory item.

Introduction: For the Keys job program I reminded myself everyday “Don’t be judgmental.” That is because it closes you off and alienates you from others. However, at this time, I believe you need a literal interpretation of the environment of YJC in order to accurately capture what is a necessity.  Despite the fact that I am a college graduate this program has been a vital contribution to my current survival. By the time I was out of college I was desperate to survive & make decisions such as my living situation that I could not make with capacity. One of the key issues was that I could not afford food, I was disorganized in my job search & I needed feedback because my resume was sub-par.

The first issue I mention is that I could not afford food & I was not alone because my peers were in the same boat. In fact, the lack of resources related to being able to afford food was related to many of the qualities in individual health that people told me about in the confidence of friendship from within the program. In my class, we had to vary the displayed results of malnourishment. Some of my peers had a weight that was excessively high due to poor access to healthy foods. Other of my peers were anorexic due to limited resources to acquire nutritional foods. Now I want to point out an absurdity.

The fact is I was a poor person should not have to explain to people who allocate funding why these food cards are a necessity. You should know! There is enough information out there where you should be able to make reasonable deductions about the quality of life of youth from the ages of 15-30 who can not obtain employment. For instance, you should be able to know that many of my peers would have trouble verbalizing in an articulate manner that they struggle to afford food. We should not have to say it in writing! You should know based on readily available information as a supportive member to the poorest class in the community of Kingston Ontario. This is the most important thing the program did for me within the span of 3 weeks.

Keys helped me organize my job hunt. I feel without that help I would have stayed at home or spent time begging just to try & survive. Through Keys, I wrote down leads for meaningful jobs that could develop into careers I turn in to long term success. Again though without the assistance of a grocery store gift card, I could not have been at Keys as often as I would. Job hunting is fine. However, the immediate needs for food are more pressing. I am not ashamed to say without Keys I would not be on a Productive path & I would drain Ontario Works for longer just trying to sort out basic needs for the meantime. Again talking about my situation is embarrassing, however maybe if I do someone else won’t have to explain the awkward indignities of being poor even after attending a College program as a disabled adult!

The program did a wonderful job helping resume organization & giving feedback on a job application. They helped me organize my professional experiences & strategize how to best sell myself to an employer. This task will help me with the use of a professional and creative CV for the next 2 years of my employment. Now I can reformat this resume when needed to search for better opportunities. As a bonus, I will say Dan did a better job than my college professors did at helping me format a resume. Something like this helps, but it is worthless on an empty stomach. If I did not have food I would not have come to Keys for this help. I would be spending my time at food banks & begging my family. Rather than focus on my professional development. This is something else I am embarrassed that I have to explain in the face of more Conservative cuts.

“You can not cut your way to prosperity.” Justin Trudeau 2019. I understand that our current administration at the provincial level is putting pressure on everyone to save money. However, the facts are facts. Ontario has rampant poverty which the UN defines as earning less than a dollar a day, illiteracy that is vastly underestimated & workers that would never be ready if not for the full contributions of the program such as a Youth Job Connection. If I have to explain these cuts to this extent, maybe guys don’t need just a letter! Maybe you need the common sense to hire more people like me who completed college & then were homeless the month after completing college! Maybe you need less privileged administrators who are not guaranteed their roof above their head, food on their plate & absolute safety! Maybe that it is what it will take to not have issues with stuff like justifying grocery cards as a necessity to the lowest class of people! If you are considering cutting the grocery card. My only question for you is,

“What the hell is wrong with you?”

Signed with outrage!

Why I won’t advocate for Communist Socialism or Religious Socialism?

Ashton Deroy Writes: Hey guys I have been busy peacefully protesting working Standards at StarTek.

StarTek Demands.png

Today we are going to go back to Business as usual. Which is discussing my theories & observed realities on Socialism.  Today I am going to share why I do not support Regressive Socialism. Like the Socialism you see in Religious Socialism (Cults) & Communist Socialism (Aggressive Nationalizing) .

What are my Socialist values then? Well, I prefer Socialism that actually still uses money. My Socialism focuses on sustainable economic development and access to essential services & an economic safety net. My version of Socialism does not like the Universal Basic Income at this time. Rather we focus on the democratization of the workplace. We also create a newer version of Economics which recognizes Ecological sustainability. Lastly, my version of Socialism uses humanism and recognizes human rights based on Canada’s beautiful Charter of Rights & Freedoms. Technically I use the modern Canadian model of Socialism which makes sense because I am Canadian.

If you give up Individualism & finance for faith. It is religious Socialism..png

Religious Socialism

Last week I ate at a cult recruiting restaurant. It was good Brazilian Style food. Too bad I will not be back. I preached to the cult recruiters about Human Rights. Then I realized I probably stepped on their toes for what they believed in. Take a look at this News article to hear what their faith 12 Tribes is all about. Click here to view this video.

As you can see they are designing a society centered not around Capitalism but around their faith. This religious Socialism also uses a disciplinarian approach to controlling the behavior of children. They describe letting go of Spanking as “Hell breaking out”. This is not the grand societal design I have in mind. I am against spanking period! I saw my mom’s old boyfriend Trent Gallant beat his daughters growing up. I have just had enough of that kind of behavior. Like I have had a lifetime of exposure of it & I am 26.

Faith + Socialism = Cult.

It is actually that simple. If you notice people share the profits of a religious operation for the interest of the survival of their group. There is no recognition of individualism or personal property. They are using symptoms of Socialism. Then mixing with faith with Socialism can quickly spiral into the radical design. Socialism is supposed to exist to heighten everyone’s quality of life. This form of Socialism however only heightens the quality of life for the spiritual leaders.

Communist Socialism

Communist Socialism.png

This is a little more complicated. Explaining why I don’t like Communist Socialism. Communist-style Socialism was brought about in Russia through promises of a Socialist paradise. What happened instead? Aggressive Nationalization of private resources, businesses & properties. As well as an installment of regressive style leadership & tyrannical government.

Communist Socialism looks a bit more like this

Aggressive uprising + Tyrannical government + Nationalizing everything – (All human rights on a political level)

I do admire the type of Socialism you see in a place like Cuba, although it has been making more progressive movements. Communism is looking beautiful. Psst whispers “If you don’t understand the political pieces whatsoever.” However, it is a dystopian society with a lot of ugly bits hidden. For example secret police, conspiracy killings & in the case of China a hidden truth about ecological collapse.

When we look at Socialism? We have to look at installing a practical model based on our democratic values as well as the successes of Capitalism. I look at Progressive Socialism as more of an upgrade to Capitalism through the Labor movement, rather than

5 Years later… Dialogue on StarTek in Kingston Ontario.

Malicious intent

Ashton Deroy Writes: Even After 5 years later & a return to Kingston Ontario. I still have a bad taste in my mouth when people mention my ex-employer StarTek. I mean I don’t know why? They were so “perfect” to me.  Maybe it was the lack of schedule control, the fact they pay under the living wage or maybe it was just the fact that creatively speaking I would deal with their terrible customers all day & then the manager I had would chuck dog s*** at me!

It is worth exploring in a full-blown style essay. Why am I still upset with StarTek 5 years later? I guess you can say I almost never dealt with them properly. Maybe today helped though when I called the company’s Human Resources department & told them 5 years later, but I am still pissed. The first thing is the lack of schedule control. People have families & Social lives. Yet time after time StarTek unnecessarily cuts careers short because people are dealing with family issues, childcare issues or just mental health issues. Damn it StarTek, why should I not call you and tell you I am pissed?!

https://www.ontariolivingwage.ca/living_wage_by_region

The living wage for Kingston Ontario is $17.57 hourly. Not $15.50 you cheap pieces of s****! You represent T-Mobile and it is a seriously bad reflection on them that they can not pay their employees a living wage. Again this is adequate aggression coming from me. You have 0 right in the public’s eye to act like another corporate Tyrant! Pay your people a living wage & realize that it is not up for debate.

Creatively written: Lastly, why would I be happy about a place where I was bullied by customers then bullied by management? Like I said it is pretty much like I was being picked on by customers on the phone 10 hours a day. Then when I got off the phone…. My manager made sure my mouth was open wide so she could huck in dog s****! Yes, it is reasonable to be reviewed as an employee, but what happened to me was a systematic beat down.

To StarTek:

Kiss my a**! My friends were considering you for employment and I just wanted to share my true opinions. No, I do not think my friends should work for StarTek. I consider my movement an outside intervention on behalf of the workers of Kingston. Do better, I am not afraid to say you need to do better.

(613)-888-1958 is my telephone number. If you have a concern with my blog feel free to text me or call me. Yes, I indeed called StarTek’s human resources department today to say “5 years later & I am still pissed.” I think it needed to be said. I am still asked about StarTek and this act of civil disobedience was to say, “I have reasons to feel the way I do about StarTek.” This was a very upsetting experience for me.

I believe call centers starting back in 2015 beginning with StarTek played a role in my downfall to a road of drug addiction, self-harm and suicidal behavior.

Call center confessions: 3 calls I slammed the phone on.

Ashton Deroy 3 calls I slammed

Ashton Deroy writes: This is a conversational blog. That being said I will not censor who I worked for. In compliance with privacy regulations, I will not recall customer names or any details of accounts. Here is how it is though. If I worked for you or your client I am going to write about it. The only damage I can really do is alienate myself from the telecom industry. An industry I decided to retire from as a matter of health.

That is just a fact of life. In my call center career, I have worked for StarTek, Hinduja Global Services, Concentrix, Stream, Teleperformance and AND Agency. Some of this will also be from my recollections of memories & personal storytelling as is custom with many blogs.

Windstream logo

Call Center: Teleperformance

Client: Windstream

Problem: Phone out of service, requires fixing right away.

Okay so in this call picture an afternoon, where I am already high on caffeine pills in Downtown Toronto by Eglington at Teleperformance. I talk to the lady on the phone and she is upset because her phone isn’t working. I tell her something like we will get a tech out there a month from the call. She starts screaming, “This is unacceptable! I want a manager!” I hung up… No, I will not win any Tech support of the year awards for that. Why did I hang up? Well, escalating is pointless in tech support. Managers can’t credit customers more, they don’t have magical call taking powers that make a technician available. I just thought rather than drive up my call handle time with a pointless call flow I would just hang up! SLAMMED

“Sorry, you have no phone service but there is nothing we can do as a service vendor.”

T-Mobile for business

Call Center: StarTek

Client: T-Mobile

Problem: My bill seems too expensive. Debating the company accountant!

Okay, so this was an early morning call-in Kingston. This customer calls in and he says his bill is too high. This is a business service line I am working on. Turns out this guy is the company’s accountant and after 1 hour of examining this lunatic’s bill line by line. He is ready to go again. I am autistic and I have a learning disability related to math. So I just, go ahead and hang up! SLAMMED!

“They paid me $11 an hour. That is hardly enough to justify learning math at the accountant’s level.”

Shaw Cable logo

Call center: S&P Data

Client: Shaw Cable

Problem: I am a telemarketer!

I was telemarketing at S&P Data in Trenton. Basically, my job was to sell a home phone line to Shaw Cable customers. This was my second job after getting a certificate in Digital Marketing & I hated it! So, as usual, I call someone’s home. They let me do my full sales pitch for some sadistic reason. Then the person just starts going ape s**** on me! I mean they just let me have it. Explaining how I am such a foreign piece s**** for calling them in Alberta and they don’t even know me! Then I am asking them to buy something. I can’t say I blame them but the rant went on too long. So I hang up! SLAMMED!

“In parts of Alberta, it is a bit of custom to gain personal relationships with Business salespeople. The anonymity of call centers has  been largely criticized as a poor way of approaching business relationships & in many places Telemarketing is an offensive practice.”

Listen I was never an employee of the month at a call center. If I was that certainly would not be as interesting to write about. I think the worst thing about these places is, me hanging up on the people I did was not that irrational. The customer at WindStream tried to abuse me with hierarchy, the T-Mobile customer abused me in relation to capacity for logic & reasoning & the Telemarketing customer simply scolded me! Phones have a hangup option for a reason. I am damn proud I pressed it.

Want to read a positive workplace story? Read about my experience working for Hawkins Cheezies. Like anybody living on the edge, there are winning points in my life where I show true character. Then there are other times where I have to bail on my responsibilities for one reason or another.
